Issues we all care about

Learn more about where Karl stands on the issues and how he will go to work for us in Lansing!

Affordable Energy

This last session, our current state representative was the deciding vote on partisan energy legislation that mandates wind and solar to replace dependable natural gas power generation.  This will lead to reliability and affordability issues for U.P. families and businesses. Dependable, affordable electricity is the lifeblood of our economy. I stand for energy legislation based not only on environmental impact, but also on the economic impact on Upper Michigan families and businesses.

Local Control

Another provision of the energy legislation passed last year will take away our local communities’ input over land use. Siting of large wind and solar projects will be decided, not by our local elected officials, but by unelected bureaucrats in Lansing. There is also legislation pending that would centralize control of issues like septic approval and inspection. I believe local communities should have primary decision-making over our land use.

Education

Karl is alarmed because he sees what we all see – our school system is failing, Michigan is constantly ranked in the bottom third of education systems in the United States.

But the problem is bigger than just more funding. From traditional education, and homeschooling, to Career Technical Education, and STEM, Karl Bohnak supports successful outcomes for every student. At the core of student success is a parent’s ability to be the gatekeepers for their child’s curriculum. Parental advocacy and input is important for a student to thrive and succeed.

Gun Rights

The last legislative session saw the passage of some of the strictest red-flag laws in the country. It also installed provisions that will require expanded background checks and registration requirements. These new laws will not keep guns out of the hands of criminals and will only burden law-abiding gun owners and sellers. I stand for constitutional carry for all law-abiding state residents and against any legislation that will whittle away our constitutional rights.

Law and Order

Karl stands with our first responders who work hard everyday to keep us safe.  From police officers to fire fighters to our medical personnel – Karl believes we need to support those who put their lives on the line to make a better community for all of us.  Karl will work to get our first responder community the resources they need to have the best possible outcome when they respond.  After all, any one of us could be making the next call for help – and we’d want them to have what they need to help us or our loved ones when they’re vulnerable and most in need.
